Alcyon will develop a commercial photonics circuit portfolio and a digital platform that will facilitate access to design new photonic integrated circuits (PICs)
Photonics has brought well-established processing technology from the microelectronics industry to the development of high-density Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs).
PICs employ a range of components in waveguide form to emit, focus, split, isolate, polarize, couple, modulate, and detect light. This has enabled complex optical signal processing in compact chips and fabrication in standard foundries of microelectronic devices at low costs. Although great progress has been made in developing PICs for communication applications, key functional building blocks (BBs) do not deliver the performance required for many PIC applications in terms of bandwidth, energy consumption, and price.
Alcyon will develop a commercial photonics circuit portfolio and a digital platform that will facilitate access to design new photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The platform will be empowered by Alcyon’s proprietary photonics circuit design process based on sub-wavelength gratings (SWG), which are photonics metamaterials with unique characteristics. The impact of the project on the photonics value chain will be huge. Thanks to the Alcyon platform, new and more efficient photonics-based applications will be commercialized.
